PHILLY ATTEMPTS WORLD-RECORD SOUL-TRAIN LINE TO HONOR DON CORNELIUS
Organizers urge city officials, labor leaders, region’s residents and Philly music lovers to get on board!

(PHILADELPHIA) – Philadelphia is set to honor the man behind the “hippest trip in America,” with an attempt at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, 4 p.m., Monday, Feb. 13, at breaking the world record for largest Soul Train line. Expected to attend: Mayor Michael Nutter, Kenny Gamble, Sheriff Jewell Williams and Councilwoman Cindy Bass.
Radio One and event organizers envision the occasion as a way to commemorate the passing of Soul Train creator Don Cornelius -- as well as offer a time for local Soul Train fans to gather, express ‘Philadelphia love’ and honor the city’s own special place in soul music history.

The world-record commemoration was sparked on Facebook, where interest in organizing such an attempt in Philadelphia went viral, at the same time WRNB radio personality Dyana Williams began organizing a similar tribute on-air and in the market . The current record – of 211 people -- is held by a group of high school students, staff and alumni in Berkley, Calif. "Philadelphia, The City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection is a grand music mecca, as well as the birthplace of the Soul Train theme written by the legendary duo of Gamble & Huff,” Dyana Williams, Co-Host of Soulful Sunday 100.3 WRNB-FM Radio One. “With the World's Largest Soul Train Line this coming Monday, we will honor the legacy and indelible cultural impression left on billions by Don Cornelius and Soul Train!”

“Considering how Philly responded to events like Live Aid, Unity Day, Million Woman March, Welcome America and our normal annual events, I thought 211 – we can do that,” said radio host Manwell Glenn, on whose Facebook page the idea took hatch. “It’s Soul Train and Don Cornelius. Everybody wants to get involved.” Unlike recent spontaneous and flash-mob Soul Train lines in Chicago and New York respectively, Philadelphia’s effort is designed and organized to make a statement: There is no better place for world-wide recognition of soul music appreciation than the City of Brotherly love. Williams and WRNB successfully organizing “the World LArtge3st Line Dance at the Art Museum during the Welcome America Festivities.

Radio One and organizers also envision the event as an occasion for Philadelphia – a city struggling with rising homicides and school budget cuts – to express their love for the city. They plan to reach out to public officials, labor leaders and community representatives to “Get on Board” for soul music, for Don Cornelius, for Philadelphia.
The fee to apply to Guinness World Records(TM), which accepted the group’s application on Tue., Feb. 7, was promptly pledged by a group of sponsors consisting of Community Marking Concepts (CMC), Isshoes Shoe Store, Sheila Simmons, Teenagers In Charge, Manwell Glenn and Bob Turner’s Hair Gallery. Other services are being provided by Prestige Concepts LLC, PARENT POWER and Renaissance Mann Inc. “CMC is glad to lend our support to this effort to honor Don Cornelius and generate good will for the great people of the City of Philadelphia,” said Phoebe Coles, a partner at CMC. --END-
